For more than five decades, Peter Walker (American, b. 1932), founder of PWP Landscape Architecture, has merged the poetic with a sense of immediacy and familiarity. The work of his Berkeley-based firm has been characterized by understated geometric configurations, clarity, and locally available materials that retain their natural shape, color, and texture. For example, at Harvard University’s Tanner Fountain, the deceptively simple arrangement of rocks and water has served for more than thirty years as a public space, outdoor classroom, children’s playground, snow-covered meditation ground, amphitheater, and cooling station.
