A unique meld between New York past and future. A gift that will keep giving for years to come.

In a place where you're surrounded by water that you can't touch a floating pool is a soothing reprieve. It's both on and in the water...so are we. If only we'd had this in 04.

What a treasure! New Yorkers, especially our children, deserve one more pool. It gives all of us more opportunity to access the water, learn how to swim, have fun and stay healthy. And hopefully many other architects will be inspired by this innovative way of using a space for recreation and fun.

Yet another treasure on NYC's map. I can't wait to do my laps there on a hot summer evening. New York is STILL the greatest! Encore!!!

Beautiful, practical and popular. There are too few safe and fun places for kids in NYC to play. We need more of this.

I was fortunate to have spent an evening this summer on the Floating Pool Lady. Kudos to the designers for creating such a magical place. Recognizing this project despite the bureacracy of city government is an accomplishment worthy of this award and many more. Good luck beating those fabric shoes!

This is an inspiring design that rejuvenates the waterfront - form and function meet perfectly.

this design brings the healthiest form of fitness to the masses, teach kids to swim and they will be healthy for a lifetime

The view was wonderful. Other than that I do not get what people found so exciting about it. I guess it just shows how pathetic NYC's other aquatic opportunities are.

It was one of the most poetic architectural gestures on the harbor that I have seen in a long time. It captured the essence of adaptive-reuse in such a creative, thoughtful and fun way. It mixed good design with great function. Everyone I know who went to the floating pool adored it.

Because it reintegrates New Yorkers with their waterfront heritage, while giving them a good time.

A wonderful marriage of beauty and function. What I especially liked was the way one "walked the plank "to get to the pool. It created an "ah" response at the realization of suspension over the water of the harbor combined with the anticipation of swimming in a pool in the harbor. Lots of levels of

The floating pool captures the essence of urban planning for park design by using commercial materials for public use with its unique concept. This mobile pool can be transported to various neighborhoods within the port while promoting the benefits of waterfront redevelopment. J.Andrusky

What a concept! A great design and realized into something so practical.

makes more sense to bring it to areas that currently enjoy no waterfront access whatsoever, rather than enhancing areas that have some sort of amenities already. would be more powerful that way. oh well, maybe after two years....

From what I know this is the culmination of a long and extensive quest that has produced a superb final product. The Floating Pool recycles an old barge, uses elegant clean design and reactivates the waterfront. What more can we ask for?

Very impressive! Great use of space which doesn't actually take up any real land space. I like that it can be moved around and will provide much needed public access to swimming facilities . The staff there did a great job in keeping it clean and organized. Bravo!

i don't get what the big deal is about. its so boring compared to the brooklyn bridge park that will be built on this site.

The floating pool is terrific! Beautiful design with a beautiful backdrop. (a note unrelated to the design: the operating staff at the pool did an amazing job organizing the lines and answering questions)

it's a good design because it solves a real human problem--lack of access to aquatic fun in the city--with grace and restraint.

It's about time - since Paris always has its floating pool every summer. It's not new concept but a must have as NYC as cosmopolitant city. The architect should include 'piscine josephine baker' as precedent. It's a good design from the get go as Parisian enjoy the pool for many years. C'est tout.

Very cool concept!

the design in and of itself is rather nice, but swimming in the new york city skyline is something else. i love the idea that it moves around to be shared with different neighborhoods. the temporal aspect of the design is really special.

The best of form meeting function!
The concept of floating water on water is sublime as was the experience of the swim itself. Manhatten sky line on one side and the heights on the other. bravo!

Wonderfully designed. You took something not so beautiful and made it gorgeous. I think it's great to have such an amenity in a city like New York, where many recreational spaces have been eliminated. It should definitely be a prototype for other borough's/cities with watefront :)

The Floating Pool Lady brilliantly, beautifully gave Brooklynites the ability to swim in an area that had been inacessible for more than 200 years. Free and handicapped-accessible, it brought together people of all ages, incomes and abilities in an atomsphere of ease, acceptance and fun.

adaptive reuse at its best ... a clean design celebrates the concept, which infuses history with poetry for the active enjoyment of the community. thank you for this beautiful vision - and for revitalizing the waterfront.
Posted by barbararomer
The self-satisfied presentation is inadequate for the purpose, leaving people waiting longer to use it than the time spent swimming. The affected and forced symmetrical design is unnecessarily rigid and pretentious. This does not deserve a design award.

Floating Pool fuses New York City history of swimming barges with 21st century senibilities and design, which energized a portion of the Brooklyn waterfront this summer. The Floating Pool should serve as a prototype for the city to replicate for other locations throughout the five boroughs. Kudos!

There should be one of these pool barges every ten blocks, or so, on the East and Hudson Rivers, so everyone in the City can swim in the summer, any time they want to.
What an amazing project!
