This sheet of sketches by Piranesi after a book by the Austrian architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656–1723) shows how he collected ideas from earlier attempts at architectural reconstructions. One of two surviving sheets, it shows Piranesi’s methodical procedure, whether depicting a major monument or simply a detail.
