Design for Decorative Relief Panel below Central Stela of South Wall of the Piazzale de’ Cavalieri di Malta, Rome, 1765–66

This working drawing for the decorative panel below the central stela, or funerary monument, shows the Rezzonico castle set among trophies referring to the Order’s military history. The weapons in Piranesi’s reliefs may allude to the ancient Roman military ceremony of the Armilustrum, which took place nearby.
