design for a “bissona,” or festival gondola, ca. 1744–45

Unquestionably the finest of Piranesi’s early Venetian drawings, this scintillating design for a bissona recalls the draftsmanship of Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo and Francesco Guardi, both of whom produced designs for Bissone. Such craft were designed for water festivals, and their ephemeral nature offered the designer unlimited scope for fantasy.
