elevation of piranesi’s own funerary candelabrum with putti, from vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi..., 1778

This giant candelabrum was designed by Piranesi for his own funerary monument. According to the plate caption, the frieze symbolizes poetry and the arts, the passage of the seasons, and the transitory nature of human life. This candelabrum features in the background of Pietro Labruzzi’s posthumous portrait of the artist.
