perspective view of the “warwick vase,” from vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi..., 1778

This extraordinary second-century vase was discovered in fragments near Hadrian’s Villa during Gavin Hamilton’s excavations in 1769–70. It was originally restored to Piranesi’s design for the celebrated collector Sir William Hamilton. Piranesi included this perspective and two elevational plates in his Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi... plates.
