Portrait of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, 1779

This posthumous portrait was based on an early 1760s portrait bust by the British sculptor Joseph Nollekens. The artist is wearing the insignia of his knighthood of the Golden Spur, conferred by Pope Clement XIII. In the background is Piranesi’s marble candelabrum, now in the Louvre, created for his funerary monument.
